Adult Male Survivors: Understanding the Issues
BACKGROUND/PURPOSE
This two day workshop is designed for a variety of helping professionals.
It is aimed at those who do not specialize in working with adult male
survivors, but who have encountered or who expect to encounter adult males
with sexual abuse in their backgrounds. The two day format will provide
participants with an understanding of the special issues of males who
were sexually abused as children or sexually assaulted as adults. It will
equip them not to work in depth with male survivors, but rather to provide
initial support that is informed, empowering and sensitive as well as
to make referrals, as appropriate.
STRUCTURE
The program will combine presentation of information, open discussion
and small group exercises. Participants will be encouraged to examine
their own values, attitudes and experiences, especially in terms of how
these might impact their responses to male survivors.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This workshop will be of interest to family support workers, crisis workers,
social workers, therapists, corrections personnel, educators, counsellors
and mental health workers.

Presenter: Don Wright
Don Wright M.Ed., (Counselling Psychology) RCC, is the founder and Executive Director of the Victoria Male Survivors of Sexual Assault Society, and of the Vancouver Society for Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse. The two Societies were the first programs specifically for male survivors of sexual abuse in Canada, and were amalgamated in 1997 to form the British Columbia Society for Male Survivors of Sexual Abuse.
Mr. Wright, in addition to fulfilling his duties as Executive Director of BCSMSSA, has traveled throughout western Canada providing training to professionals in the sexual abuse field and has presented at conferences in the U.S. and Canada.
Mr. Wright is a vocal advocate across Canada for male survivors of sexual abuse, raising awareness through media interviews, conference presentations, gentle but persistent pressure on the government, and through working as a consultant to the provincial and federal governments in the area of sexual abuse recovery for males. In addition to his administrative duties, Don maintains a limited case load of male survivors in individual therapy. Don has been called upon by the Provincial Ministry of Attorney General, to participate in the development of Provincial Practice Standards, an Evaluation Framework, and a Code of Ethics for Specialized Victim Services and Sexual Assault Centers in B.C. Don served as the first Chair of the Vancouver Victim Services Coordinating Committee, and of the Greater Victoria Victim Services Coordinating Committees while those two groups developed referral protocols for Victim Services Programs in the their respective cities.
Mr. Wright has served on the Board of Directors of MaleSurvivor: National Organization Against Male Sexual Victimization since 1999. He is also a founder of Canadian Association of Male Survivor Services, now in its formative stages.
In November 2001, the B. C. Human Rights Commissions awarded Mr. Wright the B. C. Medal of Honour for his pioneering work in this field.
